Biography

Professor John Adams is a research degree (PhD and DBA) supervisor at the School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. His first degree is in Economics and Public policy from the University of the West of Scotland in 1978. He gained a PG Diploma in Education from the University of Glasgow in 1979 and completed his PhD in Manpower Planning in Tanzania with the UK’s Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA) in 1986. He has been the Director of the China-EU Research Centre based at Edinburgh Napier University and Economic Policy Adviser to Age Concern-Help the Aged (Scotland). He has published widely in the field of economics in both national and international academic journals, is the co-author of several textbooks and has also acted as an external examiner at the Universities of Dundee, Sussex and Hong Kong.  Professor Adams has also undertaken consultancy assignments for a wide range of public and private sector organisations in the UK. His research is mainly focused on economic development and on the process of development. Between 2006 and 2011 he jointly developed and delivered the MSc Programme in Investment Promotion and Economic Development at Edinburgh Napier University. This was mainly aimed at staff of investment promotion agencies in African countries. Professor Adams is also a member of the Centre for African Research on Enterprise and Economics Development (CAREED) based at the University of the West of Scotland. A book with a chapter from Prof. Adams was published in 2022 by CAREED and Palgrave Macmillan titled ‘Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities’. He has also published several papers in and regularly referees for the African Journal of Economics and Management. In 2011 Professor Adams joined the British University in Egypt as Head of the Department of Economics. In his eight years as HoD he was able to attend conferences in the MENA region, Sudan and S. Africa delivering research papers on development, energy and economic policy. He has been a strong supporter from the very start of the WASD and has acted as an associate editor/adviser to the Journal and contributed at several WASD conferences. In 2018 he joined Heriot-Watt University as an associate staff member and currently supervises PhD, DBA, MSc and undergraduate student theses.
