Biography
My research focuses on challenges of development in contemporary Southern Africa in these areas;
- Ageing (social gerontology) – with the global rise in population ageing, my interest is in understanding how policy makers are preparing for this phenomenon, given that by 2050, Africa will be among those regions with the highest numbers of individuals aged 60 and above and 1 in 6 will be aged 60 and older.
- Gender and women empowerment – the 17 Sustainable Development Goals require conducive societies that recognise the equality of women and men. The COVID-19 pandemic has derailed gender equality efforts by several decades.
- Migration (within the country and external) – It is important to understand the realities of those who leave and those who return and remain, and how they continue with life and how individual, household, national, and regional development is impacted by these processes.
- Disability – I am developing a research interest in this area, studying how it intersects with the other three areas identified above.
The intersection of gender, migrant status, ageing and disability is worth studying. The impact this has on the structure of households and care and support systems warrants serious research.
