Biography
Dr Nalinda Somasiri is an Associate Dean and Associate Professor in Generative AI and Machine Learning at York St John University. With over 20 years of experience spanning artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, mobile communications, and generative AI, he is a recognised authority in both academic and applied technology domains.
Dr Somasiri leads the AI for Climate and Disaster Resilience Research Group (AICDRG), which develops AI-driven hazard forecasting and disaster risk reduction tools. He has published over 80 journal and conference papers in AI, machine learning, blockchain, and generative AI, and works closely with industry partners including AWS, IBM, and Motorola on cutting-edge generative AI and machine learning research.
Prior to joining academia in 2020, Dr Somasiri held senior roles and contributed to landmark projects with world-leading organisations including Motorola Solutions (UK), Jaguar Land Rover (UK), and MBDA(UK Defense). His work spans a broad international portfolio from AI and machine learning applications in the public safety domain to complex, mission-critical defence programmes - reflecting both depth of expertise and a strong capacity for real-world impact.
Dr Somasiri holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary University of London, an MSc in Radio & Communication Engineering from King's College London, and a B.Eng (Hons) in Electrical, Electronics and Information Engineering from City University of London.
