Biography

Dr. Azzam Ahmed is an Associate Professor in Textile Engineering at the Sudan University of Science and Technology and a Visiting Researcher at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, UK. He earned his PhD in 2015 from Donghua University, China, with a focus on textile composites, and later worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Hunan University (2019–2022) in the College of Civil Engineering. His research focuses on fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, with a particular emphasis on their mechanical behavior, durability, and applications in enhancing the strength of concrete and improving structural performance, as well as the use of finite element modeling and experimental testing. Dr. Ahmed has published over 40 papers and book chapters, with more than 1,200 citations and 90,000 reads, covering topics such as CFRP applications in vehicle safety, FRP durability in marine environments, bond behavior of BFRP bars in concrete, and the effectiveness of hybrid FRP wrappings for column confinement. His recent works include contributions to water sustainability and life-cycle assessment, comprehensive reviews on the FRP strengthening of concrete, and modeling studies linking structural mechanics with composite innovations, positioning him as an active researcher who bridges materials science and civil engineering applications.

In Focus

Dr. Azzam Ahmed is a materials and textile engineering researcher whose work bridges advanced composites and structural applications. With a PhD in Textile Composites from Donghua University, China (2015), he went on to serve as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Hunan University (2019–2022), where he focused on civil engineering applications of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs). Currently, he is a Visiting Researcher at the University of Glasgow, UK, and an Associate Professor at Sudan University of Science and Technology. His research centers on the development, modeling, and testing of FRP composites—particularly basalt, carbon, and glass fibers—for use in concrete confinement, durability enhancement, and structural safety. He has published widely in international journals and book chapters, with more than 1,200 citations and over 90,000 reads, and has contributed notable reviews on FRP wrapping, bond behavior of BFRP bars, and hybrid material systems. Dr. Ahmed’s work not only advances academic understanding of FRPs but also provides practical insights into their applications in infrastructure, vehicle safety, and sustainable engineering.
